About Mid Life Cycles

Mid Life Cycles is an established independent motorcycle service, repair and parts & accessories business employing professional, qualified technicians and staffed by experienced enthusiasts with many years in road and competition riding.

We are committed to providing professional service and repair work and undertaking proven performance modifications on a range of classic, retro and modern bikes, including late-model Triumphs and Harley-Davidsons.

We also restore classic motorcycles and build a range of custom bikes – café racers, bobbers, scramblers, dirt trackers and other specials that combine Art and Style. We come to this from many backgrounds and years of experience in the motorcycle and broader automotive industries.

Michael Catchpole

Michael Catchpole started out too many years ago on a Honda S90 (after watching his brother spend more shed-time than road-time with a 1950s BSA Single). A 1969 Suzuki T250 Hustler followed, then a succession of Seventies four-cylinder bikes, including a Honda CB500-4 in early cafe racer guise.

Michael works with customers to set the specifications for their cafe racer dream-bikes

After years of running cars in circuit racing and classic tarmac rallies, culminating in seventh outright in Targa Tasmania 1998 with Mike Darling in the Terror Seat, he returned to the bikes that he’d owned (or wanted to own) as a teenager, and began a collection of bikes that feature from time to time in promotions for the Mid Life Cycles repair and restoration services.

Mike Darling

Mike Darling raced and rallied Mini Coopers, winning a national motorkhana title back when hand-brake turns were a legitimate car-parking technique.

Mike moved on to fettling a series of race and classic cars, including a V12 Ferrari, and competed successfully in classic rallies including the Grand Prix Rally and Targa Tasmania. Mike brings automotive engineering skills and years of hands-on experience to the team.

Mike brings engineering and organisational skills and a focus on quality to the build team. Detail focused and a frustrated artist, he keeps an eye on longer term projects.

Shane Walker

Experienced bike builder and racer Shane (“Phantom”) Walker is the Manager and daily troubleshooter for the Mid Life Cycles team and has successfully built up the service and parts side of the business.

Drags aside, Shane also delights in pedaling his Harley-Davidson road bike faster than many sports bike riders believe possible.

Shane is happy to advise on your motorcycle service and tuning needs, a custom project or restoration job. Call (03) 9421 3765 to book time to discuss your service or build, large or small.

Charlie Hallam

Charlie Hallam has a strong pedigree in the motorcycle industry. Charlie has extensive experience in general service and repairs; high-level factory training from several major manufacturers (including Triumph and Harley-Davidson), experience in engine diagnostic, tuning and rebuilding; and extensive work on high-performance, modified and race bikes. Before he joined Mid Life Cycles, Charlie was senior tech at Melbourne’s largest multi-franchise motorcycle dealership and is regarded as amongst the best in the business.

Being part of a renowned engineering family also helps…. Charlie draws on that knowledge and carefully-developed performance kits to extract a LOT more performance from Triumphs and Harleys in particular. Give him a call to discuss your go faster modifications.

Nic Sutcliffe

Nic Sutcliffe joined the team mid-2016 and brings experience and a thoughtful approach to his work. Trained in general service and repairs, including factory training from several major manufacturers, Nic enjoys the wide range of work undertaken in a shop like Mid Life Cycles.

Like Charlie Hallam, Nic enjoys working on late-model bikes but he also has an eye for the classics, including Ducatis, Guzzis and BMWs. Customers with BMW’s new RNineT have benefited from Nic’s painstaking approach and eye for detail when it comes to modifications.

We also look to a network of experts – painters, fabricators, polishers, platers and parts suppliers – who all contribute their bit to the motorcycle magic.
